From people who've been there

A man sitting alone on a city doorstep with his bag at his feet
You made it home. That counts.

Today is day one, and day one is the hardest. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to make the next call.

Asking for help is strength.

It's the hardest, bravest thing there is. Every person you've ever seen living well in recovery started with one phone call they didn't want to make.

Medication is recovery.

If Suboxone or methadone keeps you alive and moving forward, you're in recovery. Period. Anybody who says different hasn't been where you've been.

A slip isn't the end of the story.

If you use again, don't hide. Pick the phone back up. Nobody gets kicked out of recovery.

Your life is waiting on the other side.

A job. Your own place. Your kids. Paying your own way. Being somebody your neighbors count on. People get all of that back every single day, and you can too.

Nobody does this alone.

That's what meetings and peers are for. Go sit in the back of a room. You don't have to talk. Just keep coming back.

One thing nobody tells you when you get out

Your tolerance drops while you're inside. The amount you used before can stop your breathing now. The first two weeks home are the most dangerous time. If you use, don't use alone, use a lot less, and keep Narcan close.
